The machinery inside a watch that keeps things ticking is called the movement or a calibre. A synonym of size, the word ‘calibre’, first used as a watchmaking term in 1715, originally referred to the build of a watch movement—the layout, dimensions, shape and size of the wheels, barrels, bridges and so on. Today the word is a substitute for movement, the complete mechanism with the mainspring, escape wheel, bridges, gear train, and other components, including the rotor in automatic watches. Calibres are either mechanical or quartz-based. While the latter are powered mostly by a battery, the former can either be manual winding, or self-would by an oscillating mass or rotor.
ESSENCE
To celebrate the mechanical complexities of the horological world, the Louis Moinet Mechanical Wonders collection is equipped with timepieces that defy norms and regulations of the watchmaking industry. These timeless watches are more than just timekeepers but a doorway to contemporary mechanical art. The Louis Moinet Mechanical Wonders collection weighs over the creativity, technicity, and exclusivity of the watchmaking process. Be it a complex exhibit dial or a hand-crafted engraving, the Louis Moinet Mechanical Wonders collection stores everything rare the horological world has to offer. The tear-drop shaped hour and minute hands proliferate the essence of Louis Moinet’s centuries-long heritage. Whereas, the case in this collection is engraved by hand.
THE INVENTORY
Every timepiece inside this collection is different from the last one. Maintaining a sense of uniqueness, the Memoris series is equipped with an exhibit dial. The hour and the minute marker is placed over the 6 o’clock marker. The design strategy inside the Derrick series is to celebrate the little known mechanical marvel, the Derrick. A lifting device that is primarily used for lifting heavy objects. The Louis Moinet Derrick series offers a mechanical tribute with a complicated movement perfectly displayed over an exhibit dial. Another series holding the avant-garde tradition of Louis Moinet is the Metropolis series. The Metropolis series is enclosed in a screw-down case with a partial exhibit dial. The dial is intricately crafted with minute details protruding from the timepieces. Whereas, the Tempograph Chrome series is a tourbillon infused line of timepieces. With a sand-blasted case, the series reflects a sense of subtlety with grace.
